The Sheet Metal Contractors of Iowa Joint Apprenticeship Training Committees in both Central Iowa, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City have a need for highly motivated people who are reliable, and inclined to work with their hands and have a willingness to earn and learn in the construction industry. Through a U.S. Department of Labor-accredited apprenticeship program, successful applicants will be placed in a sheet metal shop in Iowa sheet metal industry with employers ready to mentor and coach the next generation of sheet metal workers. Successful candidates will enter a classroom apprenticeship program in the fall to supplement each apprentice’s on-the-job learning at no cost to the applicant.. What is Sheet Metal Work?

Sheet metal workers are involved with the applications of all types of sheet metal. Job opportunities are diverse and may include duct fabrication, welding, installation and maintenance of heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems as well as gutters, roofing, siding, or food service equipment. Architectural sheet metal workers' fabricate and install brass and copper ornamentation, columns, skylights, signs and metal ceilings that add beauty to commercial and residential buildings.


  • At least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test and subject to continuing random testing
  • Valid Driver's License

Who is a Sheet Metal Worker?

Sheet Metal workers are in good physical condition. They have above average mechanical and mathematical skills. They possess good eye-hand coordination, spatial/form perception and manual dexterity. They like working with both their hands and minds. They want to learn. Their personalities include patience, dependability, accuracy, ability to get along with others in a team atmosphere and enjoy seeing a job come to its completion.

Earnings for sheet metal workers vary depending on the geographical area of the applicant. Upon completion of a sheet metal apprenticeship, full-time workers can expect to earn $50,000 or more per year in wages, plus pension and health benefits.
